Setting up Large Downloads

I am attempting to setup a large file for Download. I have used SFTP to copy the file into the root level of the JDownloads folder. The file is roughly 12.5GB. When I go to create the download in JDownloads, I set everything up and select the file in the root area and click save. The browser spins for a while and then I get the following error:

Service Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

The file in question gets moved into the category folder as expected but a download item is not created.

When you say 'browser spins for a while'  how long was it?  Could you advise what are your internet Download and Upload speeds.
or was this an XAMPP or similar site?

For very large files you would be better to store the actual file in a cloud based fileserver such as Dropbox, Google Drive or similar
