Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

Hello,
I tried doing some research but I had no luck.
I am using and old version of Docman on an old J! 1.5 website. Is there a way to migrate all data from Docman to JD?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
There are no totally automated tools to import from Docman but it is very simple to import into jDownloads (jD).  Assume you have extracted the categories and documents from Docman as a set of directories and files.  Assume also you have just installed the latest version of jD.  There is some configuration to do.  In particular turn off auto monitoring as it is likely you will upload a lot of items initially.  this is in Configuration - Monitor Tab.  You can set a few other parameters there for file types and whether to automatically publish.

Also look at Config - Files and Folders tab and set as appropriate.  The default settings are usually OK

Look at Config - Pictures. At the end it asks if you want automatic thumbnail creation and similar matters.
Check Config Downloads tab and see that all the directories are writable.  It will also show you where the the jD root directory is located

There is a whole host of documentation at
http://www.jdownloads.net/documentations/category/jdownloads-version-3-2

Now if you are uploading a lot of files it is probably best if you do them in say small batches of a few hundred in  overload.

First upload your 'base' directories and files, with maybe some subdirectories and their files, into the jD root directory using say ftp.  This is normally a directory call jdownloads in the root of your site.
Now go to the jD control panel and on the right hand side set to the Status tab.  Click on 'Check Download Area' and you will see the categories and downloads get created.

You can now repeat by uploading further sub dirs etc into the relevant part of the structure and repeat the Check Download Area if need be.

The above is probably the fastest way but it does not copy up any descriptions, separate images or preview files. But these can all be added later.
Other ways of uploading is a drag and drop in the Files icon on Control page.  Obviously from Backend using Downloads icon or from Frontend via menu call - see User Groups Settings icon

Just remembered you need to set up at least one menu reference - list All Categories is the best one.  Menu item can of course be hidden

If in doubt please ask - and please see documentation!!
