Hi
By the Submit link I presume you mean the Add button so that users can upload from the front end.

I see from your other topic that you have started a fresh Joomla! 3 system with jD 3.2 series.  So I am guessing you have not yet met the Joomla! permissions and access level stuff.  They are actually quite easy when one knows how - but at the start they can seem very confusing.  Below I will suggest some articles I have written which many people have found useful.

But first to answer your question.  The Add button will not appear unless the user belongs to a Joomla! User Group that has Create permission,  they may also have Edit and possibly Delete permissions, on the relevant jD Categories.  Please do not rush off and attempt a quick fix but read the docs, and please ask.

A couple of 'guidelines' with permissions which may be helpful.
1. Never use Deny permission.   Deny can be used in some complex schemes but I have only ever found it necessary once.
2. Always create Joomla! User Groups (UGs)with Registered as the parent, or with another of your created UGs which has Registered as its Parent.
2 When you create a UG then also create a View Access Level with that UG as its only constituent.  You may find subsequently you can remove the Access level or add in other UGs.

Think about the organisation of your  Downloads into groups, and whether they are downloadable by everyone (Public) or by specific groups.  Set up A top level jD Category for each such Grouped.  For example I have one top level category called Public which every one can see and download from it.  Another Category is 'Logged On'where people have to be logged on to download. I usually have a UG called Uploaders who are allowed to upload.

A few design thoughts at the early stages save hours of frustration later!! ;D   If you would like please explain your objectives and if you wish I could suggest a possible way of organising things.

Some hopefully useful articles are:

Thank you for the documentation suggestions.

Yes, I started a new Joomla and a new jDownloads.  I am frustrated in having to do this as I have thousands of downloads.  It will take me forever to upload them one by one by one by one ..... the migration did not work for me. It failed on the very last step.

Thanks for confirming the "ADD" line ... it used to be called "submit".

Hi
You can get jD to add many Downloads automatically.  I would suggest say 100 or so at a time.  First it is a good idea to turn of auto monitoring in the Config - Monitoring tab. Also in the Monitoring tab you might want to set Downloads as being automatically published.

Normally in a regular installation jD will have created a directory named jdownloads in the root of your site.  You can check this by looking at Config - Downloads tab.
Also I suggest you create the top level Categories manually in the backend from the Categories Panel. You will find these are created as subdirectories of jdownloads.

Then use an ftp client such as FileZilla to copy over directories, which will become sub categories, and files which will become Downloads to the relevant location.  Then goto the jD Control panel and select the Status tab in the right hand panel. There you will see 'Check Download area now' so after clicking on that you will see jD reporting creation of the categories and Downloads, which will have been entered into the database.

I always suggest a cautious number of files/directories to be converted as it depends on your server time slot.  You might consider telling your hosting supplier what you are about to do and ask if they could give you temporarily a longer execution time.  It all depends on server loading. A couple of thousand could take an hour as there is significant activity in the database.

This method does not get images, descriptions or similar features into the Download.  If youi have a lot of those then its the XAMPP method which is more technically challenging but less manual work.

Colin, I tried what you said and it made a mess of things.  I zipped up 6 files and FTP the compressed file via cPanel and then extracted it into a directory that I wanted it in.  I checked the status and and then clicked on check download area.  It made a separate directory of it's own called _MACOSX. I DO NOT want for it make it's own directories.  It's just as much work to try and fix it all than it is to do one at a time.   I had to delete it all.

Thanks for trying, but it didn't work for me.

Hi

The files you upload should not be zipped together. FTP them as individual files into the relevant directories (Categories).  FilleZilla for example can upload multiple individual files.  jD will have created one Download of the zipped file you uploaded.   In FileZilla and all other ftp clients I have used you can select multiple files for upload the same as you would select them in Windows Explorer.  Also you can add multiple files to a queue.

I guess you are not too familiar with FTP.  There are quite a few tutorials on the web but select those that tell you how to use rather than just install.

Hi Colin, I am familiar with FTP to a certain degree.  I used to use CuteFTP years ago but since the introduction of cPanel, I didn't need it.  Same with FileZilla.  I had tried that years ago as well and again with cPanel, I didn't need it.

But in situations like this where uploading a zip file doesn't work, it appears I am forced to use an FTP program.  cPanel doesn't allow you to upload multiple files at one time.  They did over a year ago and at that time only allowed 3 at one time, now it's only one at time.

I will look into FileZilla.

Thanks for sticking by me on this ..... it helps

I found an easier way to upload my files. I thought of this after I had installed FileZilla. After signing into my host site a thought came to me .......Since all the files are stored in an old joomla on the hosting site, all I need to do is "copy" them over to the new jDownloads into the directory of my choice.  I can do this through cPanel ... I don't even need to use an FTP program.

I tried 5 files then I had jDownloads check the download area and it worked!  This will save some time.
