News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

How can I update to the latest version without losing my modifications? I currently have a 4 column layout and it changes   when I update.

Thanks for the reply, some of my modifications are done in the actual ftp files though. I tried updating but they all got wiped out. so I had to revert back to an old backup I did before the update.

Yes it is wise to do as you say as updates will often change the core code.  So one has to 're-discoover' how to apply the patch.

@solargordon
In my spare time I am working on new layouts that use flex css to allow multi columns in a media dependent manner.  These will not need any core code changes.  In the meantime if you use a table based html for your layouts then that is easy to do but can run into trouble on different sized devices See

Also you could look at the 2 and 4 column Categories Layouts to use as a 'model' for a files layout
