Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

When I configure 'Monitoring' to automatically check for modifications, the JDownloads control panel disappears with an Error: Filename empty after cleaning! message.

See also earlier topic http://www.jdownloads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8081 about unpublished download which preceded this problem.

Hi
Confirm the problem.

I have searched the jD source code and identified two places where the message 'Error: Filename empty after cleaning:' occurs.  It is an Alert.  In one case it should be followed by a directory path.

The message is just a warning that the auto monitoring process has found a file with no name, that is a file with a name like ".text"  rather than the usual "name.txt".  I loaded such a file (Actually a copy of a .htaccess file) and got a popup type message like "Error: Filename empty after cleaning: /site/public_html/jdownloads/category/subcat/" which is where I had loaded the file.

In order to stimulate the fault I had to set Config - Monitor tab "Monitor all file types? " to Yes.  I used manual monitoring as I normally have Auto monitoring disabled (Config - Monitor tab "Download directory monitoring?" as No).  In this case the Control panel was ok but when I turned Auto monitoring on then it gave the message in a popup but with the jD Control panel laid out in a 'strange' way - it had lost its css styling but not the content! So all parts were still accessible and I was able to reset the "Monitor all file types? " to No.

As a temporary work around I suggest you set Config - Monitor tab "Monitor all file types? " to No. It will then only look at the types given in list that follows that config setting.

Colin
PS the problem could be that you had a file name with 'strange' characters that all got ignored and removed.  See notes next to Config - Monitor tab "Download directory monitoring?".

When I get the error message, it doesn't include any file path so there isn't any clue as to what file is causing the issue. I do get the control panel without css so I can get to the configuration option. I now have auto monitoring turned off, but with it turned off I have to manually publish files that my users have uploaded via the front-end, which induces an unwanted time delay in the file sharing process I have set up using JDownloads.

Hi
You can leave auto monitoring on if you like.  The key is to limit the file types. It is for you to assess how important it is to have the auto monitoring on and potentially suffer the loss of layout whilst the problem is being resolved.

There is a lot of testing in checking out a 'fix' as clearly one does not want to introduce side effects. It is also a very rare instance that a file with no name is uploaded.  Please be a little patient!  And to answer your next question about how long will it take to fix, the answer as always is twice as long as half of it ;D

Exactly this is the problem here. And we cannot allow a file upload like '.pdf' or something else.

So when an admin get this message as result from the auto monitoring process, two reasons are possible:
1. a user has tried to upload a file with unallowed characters in the filename
2. the admin has uploaded a file via FTP with unallowed characters in the filename

So i think here exist not really a bug. But maybe should we enhance the check process for this cases.

I understand not really what you mean here. The auto monitoring can not 'auto' publish new created Downloads from the frontend. But it exists a special option for this for every user group in the 'User Groups Settings'. See pic.

Hi Colin,
sure we can enhance the viewed message. But i think we should additional remove the exit() line(s).
Then is a file with empty filename still processed with the current date/time value as filename.  See example pic. ;)
