News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

I know you just implemented tags so I imagine this may be coming.  But if not, here's my idea.

I'd like to be able to have a download be in multiple categories.  However, I'd imagine this is a much harder feat than the alternative.  The alternative could be to have a dropdown list of tags (same as the category dropdown) that would display all downloads with that tag.  This would be acceptable as a download can have multiple tags.

Thoughts?

Hi
I imagine that jD will use the power of tags as a selector.  As yet that is not implemented but I imagine one could search by tags, and in due course could have menu items that mimic showing downloads in a category with showing downloads that satisfy a multiple number of tags

But when is not yet known

Hi,
i think that Joomla should have some extensions to use the tags for special results.
So maybe can we adapt here anything to use it with jDownloads?

Colin have me send this module:
joomla-tags-selected
I have found a small bug and fixed it. See file attachment.
So it should now works also with content from jDownloads. The source is selectable in the module config (see pic). ;)

Have quickly tested the module and it does the job.  One enhancement that immediately comes to mind is that it would help to know what tag selection was being used.  This would be most advantageous if there were multiple versions.  A syntax like TagA || TagB if Any tag and TagA && TagB if all tags required. To appear after the Title. But see pic for better suggestion.

Are you going to add this as a jD variation for publication? Masybe as a separate Download? I will write notes when you decide best course of action, including masking multiple versions of the module.

Colin.

Hi Colin,
thanks for your ideas about this module.
I am not sure what exactly we should do with it. I have never works really with the Joomla tags feature.
I think you have here more experiences?  ::)

So i will check in the first step your noted output problems with the module options.

Edit:
It seems that we need a more reworked version to get also the module options compatible with jDownloads.
But this must wait a little bit.  :-\

I agree we should make sure it integrates well.  As a reporting scheme with fixed Tag selection it works well.  But in thinking further I believe people will want to select tags dynamically and then see the results.  Tags are powerful as they allow cross category selection.  Its a bit like searching to find documents that have some common words.  I have found this very useful in practical use of of jD to get related documents using their description.  Tags allow  basically a limited search vocabulary when there are many ways of 'cataloging'  a Download.  In a rough sense Tags might be considered as an open database where you can define your own keys and then search on a particular set of keys.  So in all I suspect we need a search tool that I can select my tag names and combine them into a logical expression.  Will think further.
