Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

Generating image file thumbnails

I have a client who is using jDownloads 3.2.18 on their Joomla 3.3 site.

They currently have around 250 downloads set up in the system and everything is working well.

They now want to display thumbnails for image (JPG, PNG, GIF) and PDF files.  I've enabled that function and can see that thumbnail images are displayed in the layout whenever a new image or PDF file is uploaded.

However all of their previous 250 downloads do not show a thumbnail.

Is there any way to force jDownloads to generate thumbnails for those previously uploaded files?  Or will the client have to go through all 250 one by one and re-upload them to get thumbnails generated for them?

Hi
Yes there is.  In Config Pictures tab there is a field 'Remake all thumbnails again using above sizes?' which is normally set to No.  Set it to Yes and then Save.  This then deletes all existing thumbnails and recreates them from the picture files. This takes some time. when done the field 'Remake all thumbnails again using above sizes?' is reset automatically to No and you should get
Notice
All thumbnails (preview) images have been re-created.

Colin,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I had seen the "Remake all thumbnails" option on my own and had tried that but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.  When I select "Yes" and click "Save" jDownloads pauses for maybe only 2-3 seconds (not nearly long enough to generate 200+ images) and then I see the confirmation messages you described.  See attached screengrab #1.

When I go to look at a JPG or PDF download on the front-end of the system nothing is there.  See attached screengrab #2.

Also: in the "Pictures" configuration tab I see the following status indicators in green (screengrab #3):

"Status: GD library is present."
"Status: ImageMagick PHP Module 'Imagick' is present."

Does something else have to be installed to make the "Remake all thumbnails" function work properly?

Correct.  There are approximately 250 downloads already in the system.  They were all uploaded before I enabled the thumbnail function -- so right now none of them have any thumbnails associated with them.  (See my first post above for details.)

Colin responded saying that the "Remake thumbnails" option in Configuration > Pictures should create thumbnails for all 250 files.  But it's not.

Again, see my message above for details.  Is there a PHP library that still needs to be installed on my server for this function to work?

Hi
I guess I was wrong about the remake- it only remakes existing ones - drat!  The name of the original image has to be in the database, and the image file has to be in the images/jdownloads/screenshots directory.
I have tried various other ways but with no success.  Only reloading seems to do the necessary.

So I will add to suggestion list for a suitable tool, actually probably as a batch operation, as other people could also want to create thumbnails subsequently.  Not much consolation at present! :(

Colin,
When I remake Images, after a minute, I get an "All White Screen" and then many of the images on the frontend are gone!

Hmm!
That sounds like a server timeout.  Will discuss with Arno.

Maybe can help higher server settings like this:
- memory_limit 512MB
- max_input_time 300
- max_execution_time 240

Please note, that when you have many images, the script can need some minutes to finish the work.

Arno, thank you and I will do that.
Will it restore all the images?

Second. The site is seeing between 6,000 and 7,000 visitors average per day, Nearly 3,000 downloads per day, and each download has 1-6 images, there are currently 800 downloads. The site will grow WELL beyond this.
Are these optimal with the future in mind?
Will it speed up the site too by chance?

Where exactly are those settings?

Found the php.ini file and changed to the suggested settings.
I will try again later tonight to "ReMake all images.
Thanks, you guys are the BEST!!!

I know another user which has more as 100,000 Downloads in thousand categories. ;)
But when you have access to the php.ini you can also try higher values (is this your own server?).
Forget not to start the server new after you have changed the php.ini.

Edit:

The numbers of thumbnails can you get, when you go via FTP to: /images/jdownloads/screenshots/thumbnails
When you have really thousands from thumbnails, it can be that you need higher server settings.
See also the jD Tools page. Here can you delete not more required images easy.

Arno,
It is my own server. And I adjusted as you suggested. It was able to process the "Remake Thumbnails" successfully. 1 problem though, after remaking the thumbnails, many of them are rejected by "Google Share" which is "Core" to my site. When the images were first uploaded, there was no problem. And it is only some of them.
