Permission problem after updating to 3.2.30 from 3.2.28

I just upgraded to 3.2.30 (Joomla 3.3.6) and am having difficulties with one particular permission setting now. I have a category setup with permission such that public cannot download. I then have a file within the category with permission set up to allow public to download (I have one password protected location on my site where I link directly to that category for non-users to download). Previously, this set up worked. Now, when I view that file as an unregistered user, I see a Download link but when I try to download the file, I get an error message that I do not have permission (if I login, I am able to download the file without problem but I need to allow unregistered users access to this file in this particular location).  I have tried to go in and resave the permissions for that file but it is still not working.

Any ideas?

But i can first tonight check this more, as i must be now away for a few hours.  :-\

When possible would be login data for the backend useful (via PM).

Hi
Actually you have an incoorrect setup  (Iam sending this from my tablet whilst in French mountains so apologies if I have to send in small bits)

If you have a Download you want to have public access then create a top level category with  Public having Download permission. Then put the Download in that Category. It should have Download permission for the public group as inherited. The calculated permission, after a Save, should show Allowed.

All your users with logins will also be able to download it as everyone automatically belongs to the Public group

More later

Hi
Permissions in Joola are challenging - a bit like when learnig to ride a bicycle, which is clearly impossible at the start but easy when learnt!  You might find the article below helpful, especially the first couple of examples

http://www.jdownloads.net/documentations/item/controlled-access-to-categories-and-downloads

If you have any queries please post again.  Also let us know if this sorts your problem.

jDownloads presently follows the Joomla! standard rules but it maybe that we will get cleverer with the error checking. The reason for the  reason why you saw a problem is I think that you are directly listing downloads. As your Download had permission to Download then it and it was in Public group then it was shown. But when a download action was actually requested it also checks on  the Category chain.  This is the "sttandard Joomla! scheme" As said earlier I anticipate that now we have a stable version then the  error checking specific in regard to jD aspects will be enhanced above the Joomla standard.

Thanks for the replies. I realize I have to change how I handle the permissions in general as if someone was clever enough to just go to the index.php?com_jdownloads page, they would be able to find the files (right now files are mainly available through module listings and the module only displays to certain usergroups).

Steve
Does that mean the problem is sorted?

Yes, I have changed the way I am doing permissions for this particular folder so it is working now.

Of note, my original question was caused by some change you introduced between 3.2.27 and 3.2.30.  My original set up of Category not allowing public to download and setting the file permission for public being able to download worked. Once I updated to 3.2.30, that no longer worked. I'm not sure why you would check the category chain as I think the individual file settings should overrule all other settings.

Steve,
Whilst I might agree with you in principle it is essential that jDownloads stays compliant with the standard Joomla! way. I am not aware that we explicitly changed anything relating to the way permissions were handled but Joomla! 3.4 did introduce some library 'corrections'.  I have not looked at these but 3.4 did introduce  "shield" which meant the the jD Backup Restore did not work anymore!  This was rapidly fixed.
