News:

Support for jDownloads 3 has been ended
Since 17 August 2023 Joomla.org has discontinued support for Joomla 3.x. Therefore, we will no longer offer official support for our Joomla 3 jDownloads version 3.9.x from January 2024.
Please update your website to the latest Joomla version (Joomla 4 or Joomla 5) as soon as possible. Afterwards, please update jDownloads to the latest published version. The longer you delay, the more difficult the upgrade process for your website is likely to be.

Hi,

We often have to update our files. We have more than 2000 files. When we upload and overwrite the files in the directories then the description and meta tags are deleted and we must manualy add them again to all the files. Is it possible that the description and meta tags are preserved when we update the files.

Many thanks.

Hi
When you say you overwrite files do you mean you delete the Download itself?  There is a Config setting that saves Images and Preview files in the Downloads tab but not one just for descriptions.  However you cane readily just Replace the file from either the backend or frontend by editing it.

There are some notes in the article below which might help
http://www.jdownloads.net/documentations/item/deleting-downloads-from-frontend-and-permissions

Also see attached pic which was from backend Downloads.  Note the Download Title and the name of the file that is downloaded are not the same thing!

Hello Colin,

Many thanks for your answer. ;D

We received a few times a year new files with the same name but with updatet content.

The first time we have gave all the Downloads meta tags so our employees can search and find the Downloads.

When we receive new files (1000 or more) we want to update all the files by ftp. When we do this the Download File Data is updated with the new file, but we lose all the meta tags (and description etc..) and we must add them again to the Download.

We hoped that when we update a file with the same name by FTP the Meta Tags (and description) doesn't get lost.

Kind regards, Kees

Hi
I have just tried this and I do not have the problem.  Also did a manual Auto monitor from jD control panel.  So there may be some configuration issue.  I also tried from front end where I deleted the file and uploaded one of the same name but different content.

What you want to do is quite a common use.  A new jD tool is in progress that will update things like the file size, date, and the MD5 and SHA1 checksums precisely for people who do an ftp update.

Do you overwrite the file directly in its category (directory).  This is what I did in above test.

Could you advise what exactly the steps you use, and what version of Joomla! and jDownloads

Hi Elvis,

I can not understand why he informations should be lost. Are you sure, that the filenames are really (complete) the same?
Is in your case the 'auto monitoring' activated?

This could be very useful.

Dear Colin and Arno,

We use Joomla 3.3.6. I have updated jDownloads from 3.2.30 to Version 3.2.31 and did some tests today. Everything looks ok now?  ;D I have overwrite files with FTP and via the Samba share. The description and meta tags are still there. We will do some extra tests,

Many thanks.
